Abstract

Tissue integration of the dental implant involves the establishment of soft tissue sealing as a result of wound healing, which serves as an effective barrier against bacterial penetration. The implant lacks cementum; however, the collagen fiber bundles are arranged parallel to the implant surface with fewer attachments by hemidesmosomes that is suggestive of a poorer quality attachment. Certain features of the transmucosal abutment such as the material characteristics, surface topography, and implant components and connections are important factors for obtaining an effective seal. In this study, we evaluated the soft tissue healing according to the characteristics of abutment surface based on a review of the current literature.
